Vitamin D Could Make You Live Longer

A simple course of vitamin D could help you live longer, according to researchers. Trials involving 57,000 people found that those who took supplements regularly were less likely to die over the six-year period of the studies.

Scientists have already shown that a deficiency of vitamin D may lead to 600,000 cancer cases each year. Other studies have linked low levels of the vitamin with heart disease and diabetes.

Now vitamin D is credited with reducing the risk of death from any causes.

While the vitamin’s function is only partly understood, it is known to slow the rate of growth of cancer cells and help the immune system.

This latest research, published Sept. 11 in the Archives of Internal Medicine, analyzed results of vitamin D supplements from 57,000 people in 18 separate trials.

During the course of almost six years, those who took vitamin D had a 7 percent lower risk of death than those who did not.

Researchers concluded that increased intake of vitamin D supplementation, such as the ordinary dose found in supplements, resulted in reduced total mortality.
